Our History
The Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church was organized on April 25, 1917, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. J. W. McDonald with a few Christian men and women making up the first congregation. Rev. McDonald served several years and passed on.
We survived the “Great Depression”. In 1932 the church was burned to the ground. At that time Rev. A. C. Scott was our pastor before the church was rebuilt. In the same year, the church was blown away. So you can see there had to be some dedicated, hard-paying Christian people to rebuild the church. Our church then prospered. Many souls were saved.
Shady Grove was bricked and church pews were purchased under the leadership of Rev. L. N. Craig. Under Rev. J. L. Dansby we added a dining hall. Rev. Paul Williams along with several members replaced the dining hall floor in 1988. Under the leadership of Rev. James V. Tyus, we purchased our church van and a new furnace.
The sanctuary and roof were damaged in the 1998 Tornado outbreak. We served in the fellowship hall every Sunday until the church was repaired. The week before we returned to our new sanctuary the roof was damaged by straight-line winds. Although we were delayed we still served faithfully. The church was once again repaired and we are so thankful for our beautiful church.
Shortly after moving to the sanctuary Rev. Dr. Louis R. Jones was called as our pastor. Many souls were saved and the church grew. Under his leadership, we paid off the remaining balance and are now debt-free.
In March 2012, Rev. Cephus Wilson, Sr. was called as our pastor. Under his leadership, we restored the church van, added a carport to protect the church van, purchased a new 42″ TV, DVD player, and stand for the youth, and the young adults donated a laptop to the church.
After serving as our Interim Pastor starting in February 2013, Pastor Timothy Sanford was installed as our new pastor on November 10, 2013. We are witnessing a great work of God and many ministries are being revitalized under his spiritual leadership.
